About Us

Robotics coaching in Cape Town

Gear Up is committed to developing the programming and mathematical skills of children in SA through robotics. We believe that robotics teaches problem-solving skills and enables kids to explore the fields of programming, electronics, mechatronic engineering, and applied mathematics in a fun, hands-on way. Our core focus is teaching kids how to problem-solve while instilling in them the confidence to try without fear of failure.

Meet the Coach

Gear Up is the brainchild of Ross Needham – a Cape Town-based robotics coach with a wealth of experience in the field of mechatronics. Widely recognised as one of the top robotics coaches and educators in the province, Ross has a track record for achieving success, with his First Lego League teams qualifying for Nationals 4 years in a row. In 2018, he achieved his goal of coaching a team to represent South Africa at the International Championships in Detroit, USA. Over the past few years, he has taught children at schools (extracurricular) and at home, as well as training teams for the annual First Lego League to make it to Nationals.

“For the last 6 years I have been teaching robotics in one form or another, all around Cape Town. I have written multiple courses for EV3 and Arduino, aimed at children from Grade 3 to Grade 12. While doing this I have also coached teams for the First Lego League, with a stellar track record. After a number of years competing in the National Division my team won First Place and represented South Africa on a global stage in Detroit, USA.

I am fortunate to be approaching teaching from a mechatronic engineering background, and want to provide access to vital STEM education for those who would not otherwise be able to learn the mandatory skills for a robot-centric future.”
